What “DMV-authorized” means for a smog check

Smog check stations are licensed by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). On its smog inspections page, the DMV says: “You can find a DMV-authorized smog check station near you or visit the Bureau of Automotive Repair.” After a passing inspection, BAR says the station sends the smog certificate to the DMV electronically.

The DMV also lists certain smog check stations as DMV partners that offer registration services, such as renewing your registration and printing a sticker. If you want to do both in one trip, ask the station whether it offers those services.

When you need a STAR station

Look at your DMV registration renewal notice. It shows one of two messages: “Smog Certification Required” or “Smog Certification Required at a STAR station.” With the second message you must use a STAR station. How to check that a station is licensed

1. Open the BAR Auto Shop Locator and search near you.
2. Filter for “Smog Check Inspection” (or “STAR Inspection” if you need it).
3. Compare the station’s BAR license number with the one you were given. Every station on our city pages shows its BAR license number and links to its BAR listing.

Is a DMV-authorized station the same as a STAR station?

No. STAR is a BAR program with higher performance standards. Your DMV registration renewal notice says if you need a STAR station. The DMV says the STAR program began on January 1, 2013.
